How to Setup Outlook Express to Use IMAP

Please notice that the following instructions are customized for CSLA users to setup their e-mail accounts on Microsoft Outlook Express.  The instructions below are also very similar to those for Winnt.

Step-by-Step Setup Instructions for first time users:

  1. Launch Outlook Express
  2. The Internet Connection Wizard window will appear if you have never used Outlook Express before.
  3. If the Internet Connection Wizard window appears, answer the questions the Wizard asks you.
  4. If the Internet Connection Wizard window DOES NOT appear, follow the following steps else skip to step 5:
      a.  Go to File and find Identities
      b.  Move your mouse over to Add New Identity to set up your e-mail account.
      c.  Type in a user friendly name for Identity name (e.g. jenny) and press the return key.
      d.  Click Yes to switch to your account now.
      e.  Answer the questions the Wizard asks you.
  5. When requested to set up your mail server under E-mail Server Names, click on the down arrow next to the select box and click on IMAP for your incoming mail server.
    Warning: Once you convert your e-mail to IMAP, you cannot use Scholar's Mail to check your mail anymore.
  6. For Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server and Outgoing mail (SMTP) server type in the name of your server (e.g. neptune.calstatela.edu) and click Next.
  7. Type in your CSLA NIS User ID for Account name (e.g. jchang7).
  8. Unclick Remember password and click NextIMPORTANT
  9. Click Finish.
  10. You can quit the Wizard by clicking on Cancel now else continue answering the questions the Wizard asks you.
  11. When prompted to view a list of available folders now, click Yes.
  12. Select the folder(s) you would like to view and click on Show.
  13. Click Ok.
  14. If the Dial-up Connection Window appears, click Work Offline .
  15. To view your previous messages:
      a.  Locate the folder with your server's name (e.g. neptune.calstatela.edu) on the left-hand side.
      b.  Expand the folder by clicking on the + sign next to the folder name and a list of sub folders will appear.
      c.  Click on the name of the sub folders to view your previous messages.
